I actually volunteer at the school library and have heard the librarian direct children to books that are appropriate to their reading level. I didn't think anything of it at the time ... I suppose I figured if anyone would know a child's level, it would be the librarian.

I mentioned your post to my husband and the questions it's now raised in my mind. Have my kids tried to check out a book and been told they can't read it? Why shouldn't they be allowed to check out whatever they want? We're always helping them with words or passages they stumble over.

He suggested that it's probably more a question of resources. There are 300+ kids at the school sharing books in a library that is the size of our living room. He said maybe they have to control who can select what so that there are enough books to go around. Makes sense, but it doesn't make me feel better.

Books and reading are very important to me, too, and I'm trying to pass that on to the Punks. I've been reading to them since I figured out how to hold a baby and a book at the same time ... I think Ryan was 4-days-old. Birthdays and Christmas always mean new books and the standing rule in our house is you have to be in bed and quiet at 8:00 ... if that means you're looking at books, fine. I'm not going to complain if you're quietly reading.

We've always had weekly trips to the library and while I choose a few books for each of them, I've always allowed them to select some to. I have to admit I haven't been taking them as often since they're both in school. I slacked off because we have less time, and besides, they can check out books there, right?

I think I'll be reinstating our weekly library trips. I am sorry you had such rotten experiences, but I'm glad you shared. It definitely made me think about what's going on for my two.Karen Bladoshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17004086321586296075noreply@blogger.com
